A Year in Alpena

Local Artist, Judy Dawley

July 1, 2015 to October 30, 2015

Northeast Michigan artist, Judy Dawley, decided to use Alpena, Michigan as her muse while painting her way through a year in the town that became home to her and her family so many years ago.  Her watercolor paintings capture the treasures of a city situated on the shores of Lake Huron nestled among rivers and lakes, with a downtown straight out of Currier and Ives.  The exhibit is open June 20th through October 30th.

"Specimens," a Show of Photographs

2014 Juried Art Winner, Joseph Donna

"Specimens, a show of photographs, can be viewed as 'two-dimensional sculptures,' reflecting my interest in three-dimensional composition, the elements of design and a photograph's ability to cause one to stop and contemplate its true meaning. " ~ Joseph Donna

Race For The Kids

Gone to Pieces Quilt Guild

Gone to Pieces Quilt Guild currently has 94 quilts on display in the Wilson Gallery at the Besser Museum in Alpena, MI. In all, 30 guild members have participated in this exhibit showcasing a variety of styles of quilting. Some of the work includes a ‘challenge’ project where all the guild members were given the same 18 X 22-inch piece of light yellow fabric and then used their individuality to create their own quilt using the fabric. Several of the finished challenge quilts are hung and visitors are asked to vote for their favorite. There is also a ‘Friendship Project’ where twelve guild members selected fabric and cut it into 12 blocks and passed it around the group.

Many larger quilts using the quilter’s own designed are included in the exhibit, too. The guild has donated a quilt to the museum that will be raffled off in October. All proceeds will benefit the museum.
