With a total of 180 entries from 69 artists, the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan gave out more awards than ever before in its 2015 Northeast Michigan Juried Art Exhibition. In addition to first, second and third place awards, 11 honorable mentions were presented along with three people's choice awards.

All of the awards were announced Saturday during a public reception held at the museum for the artists and their guests.

"With the volume of entries we had this year, it just seemed appropriate to give out more awards," said Danyeal Dorr. "We received phenomenal work."

Bruce Winslow, executive director of the Alden B. Dow Museum for Science and Art - Midland Center for the Arts, served as this year's juror. He selected a large-scale piece by Mark Beins entitled "Duetschland" as the first place winner.

Winslow called the piece "ambitious" and "well-painted" with a good use of color.

"He took an ordinary scene and painted it powerfully," Winslow said in his juror notes. "It's a monumental statement."
