They were all lumber towns during the last years of Michigan's great lumber boom. Some were small settlements; some were large. For most of these inland settlements, their prosperity was dependent not just on the forests, but on the Detroit & Mackinac Railway.
While a few became ghost towns, most still exist, but in a dramatically altered state, their "golden years" now generations in the past.
