Since 1966, the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan has been more than a museum—it’s been a gateway to imagination, education, and connection. Nestled in the heart of Alpena and serving eleven counties across Northeast Michigan, we are proud to be the region’s only institution accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
Each year, over 20,000 visitors walk through our door including a thousand K–12 students whose field trips spark curiosity and lifelong learning. Teachers consistently praise our hands-on STEAM activities, which align with Michigan State Benchmarks and provide students with unforgettable learning experiences.

A Mission That Transcends Exhibits
Our impact reaches far beyond what’s on display. Recent scientific studies show that museums are more than cultural institutions—they are wellness hubs that reduce stress, depression and loneliness, stimulate learning and curiosity, strengthen community connections, and significantly enhance engagement, critical thinking, and academic performance. Every corner of the Besser Museum is designed to ignite wonder and intellectual exploration, starting with the 3,000-square-foot interactive history exhibit that journeys through time from the Big Bang to modern industry. Visitors can tour the Historic Village, learn about Great Lakes Fisheries, find and take-home Devonian fossils in our mini quarry, explore the Fish and Wildlife exhibit, and see a show in the only Planetarium in Northern Michigan. For those looking for creative inspiration, three galleries display art from our collections and showcase local artists.
